During my tenure at Capital One as a Principal Experience Designer, I helped drive improvements to the Search mfe (micro front end) by partnering with internal stakeholders.

The Vision

User Experience
Enhance the current search experience and scale components to re-use in other products needing a SRP (Search Results Page).

Research
Improve the overall experience, speed, and performance by leveraging new and past data to inform design decisions.

UI Design
Create a best-in-class experience by improving the UI and elevating the product to align with the brand aesthetic of Capital One and its products.

Tech
Build an MFE that can be scaled across other products and used by other platforms needing a SRP. Dynamic Filtering was introduced.

UX Overview

  • Research

    A heuristic evaluation and competitive analysis were conducted to get a comprehensive view of the market and see how the current SRP performed compared to other companies.

  • Architecture

    Reconstructed the flow and layout of the SRP, and reorganized information in a way that made sense to the intention of scaling components.

  • Execution

    Collaborated with the Auto Navigator teams during the discovery and delivery phase to stay aligned with goals and requirements. Also partnered with other stakeholders for decisions crucial to the business.

  • Assessment

    Usability tests and throttling architecture patterns were conducted to test concepts and manage the data flow that would inform future design and business decisions to help improve the overall search experience.

Summary

  • The Challenges

    Working with a team that was new to UX and Agile. This was an excellent opportunity for me to influence how to work with design and collaborate as a team. Working across platforms to create a RACI chart (responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed) as part of our ops process.

  • The Wins

    The throttling continues to show improvements in performance and speed, with the same amount of convergence as the previous non-mfe. The UI aligns with the Capital One Brand aesthetic. The Search mfe is scalable for other platforms to leverage and learn from.

  • UX Agile Coaching + Mentoring

    I had the opportunity to coach and mentor two designers and a Project Manager and Product Owner. I also stepped up as an interim Design Manager for eight months and received that recognition in my one-year review.
