The Vision

On My Way was created for teen adults who are registered UnitedHealthcare members and are transitioning from foster care into independence. The web application was designed to help and encourage teens to find housing, get a job, manage finances, and more through fun learning and gamification.

Insights

UnitedHealthcare conducted research by interviewing teens in foster care to help gain insights from observations and empathize with teens transitioning out of foster care. After gathering data, we found that teens needed better help finding housing, jobs, and managing finances in a way that was easy to digest, so we decided to gamify the learning experience.

Architecture

I always begin a project with thumbnail sketches to get a quick snapshot of screen ideas, layouts, or flow diagrams. Following these thumbnails, I created the first round of UX wireframes.

Art Direction

A mood mapping diagram was created and styled visuals to help clients visualize, structure, and classify an aesthetic and inspire the art direction.

In this example, I used the words Empowerment and Confidence to drive and inspire the art direction in either an artistic or modern style. I chose a lot of urban hipster imagery to support some of the urban imagery inspired during the research phase.

The client wanted this platform to feel current, modern, and appealing to young teen adults, so I incorporated a pop of color on one side of the board, which is fun and appealing to this age group. The other end of the panel was stripped down to a raw style to convey trustworthiness and a sense of freedom, informed by the research.

The Roadmap to Success

Upon registration, teens are prompted with a cosmo-like quiz, which will help craft a roadmap to their success.

Badge Illustrations

These custom illustrations where created for different gaming rewards. Badges are given to users as they collect game points, or complete certain courses on the roadmap to their success.

Design Handoff

Guidelines reflect the final art direction for the responsive web application and follow the client’s brand guidelines. Zeplin was used to aid developers, but spec documentation was created for the client which would allow them to white table the final product.

Final Thoughts

Stakeholders decided to make this application available from one jurisdiction to national, as they recognized the growing need and scalability of the platform. The web application also won several awards in the graphic design industry and continues to demonstrate the impact the work has had.
